The term IPV or “intimate partner violence” refers to the physical, mental or sexual harm that one partner imposes on another. An interesting study recently released from Sam Houston State University found that IPV is two times more likely to occur in two income households rather than those where one partner works while the other stays home.

This research is based on telephone interviews with about 300 women, ranging in ages from 18 – 81, who reported some form of physical abuse like kicking, slapping, biting, grabbing or shoving, as well as mental abuse. "When both male and females were employed, the odds of victimization were more than two times higher than when the male was the only breadwinner in the partnership, lending support to the idea that female employment may challenge male authority and power in a relationship," said Franklin and Menaker. This research shows that those who are seeking control, tend to lash out even more in relationships when they don’t have the perceived control they want because the partner is financially stable or has a separate support group.

If you see yourself as the perpetrator in this statistic and are motivated to change the way you are living, try taking a domestic violence class online. These educationally based classes are the first step in learning how to break the cycle of violence and emotional abuse. Whether the behavior is due to your own childhood exposure, or it has been developed due to ongoing stress or other anger issues, education helps prevention. By taking this class you will learn what exactly domestic violence entails and why it is so difficult to stop the behavior. Through learning new anger and stress management skills and ways of more positively communicating, you will learn how to overcome this behavior. Clients also learn about the legal issues involved with domestic abuse and what to expect if your spouse finally breaks down and turns you in.

Online domestic violence classes are also available to fulfill court mandates. If you need to take a batterers intervention program or domestic violence class due to legal issues, then taking them online is the easiest and most convenient way to go. Court systems generally understand that it can be difficult to find an appropriate class that works with your school or work schedule, so with the judge’s prior approval, many jurisdictions now accept distance learning classes. The benefits to the client are numerous. First of all, classes can be taken from the privacy of your own home so you don’t have to engage with a group of strangers. Furthermore, once you register for a class online, it is available 24/7, so you can take it whenever it fits into your schedule. If you are in a hurry and are dedicated to fulfilling the requirement by an upcoming deadline, you can get through them more quickly then if you had to wait for a live teacher’s traditional schedule. For example, you can devote the entire weekend to a 16-hour domestic violence class and get it behind you! Lastly, high quality programs are designed by licensed and practicing therapists specializing in the field, so the information and techniques in the class are completely current. An online domestic violence class is a positive step towards improving your life forever.
